Why a wash fails and a crown does not
A mortar wash is mortar troweled over the top of the brick, roughly sloped and finishing flush with the outer face. It has no reinforcement, no expansion joint where it meets the flue tile, and no overhang. Clay tile and mortar expand at different rates, so it cracks around the tile within a decade — and with no overhang, water that gets through runs straight down the brick face rather than dripping clear.
A proper crown is cast, at least two inches thick at its thinnest, reinforced, sloped away from the flue, with a bond break at the tile and a projection past the brick with a drip edge underneath.
When a coating suffices
Hairline cracks in a crown that is otherwise correctly shaped can be bridged with a flexible crown coating. It accommodates movement in a way rigid mortar cannot, it is inexpensive, and it buys years.
When it must be recast
Cracks wide enough for a coin, missing sections, a wash with no overhang at all, or break-up around the tile. Coating over that seals water in.
