What the cap prevents
An uncapped flue is an open pipe into the house. Rain goes down it and sits in the smoke chamber and firebox, rusting the damper and soaking masonry from inside. Birds and squirrels nest in it, which is both a blockage and a fire risk. Embers leave through it.
All of that is prevented by a component costing less than almost any other chimney repair.
Multi-flue caps on center stacks
A colonial chimney frequently has three or four flues on one wide crown. A single multi-flue cap covering the whole top protects the crown as well as the openings, and it usually looks better than four separate caps.
Mesh that blocks is its own hazard
Spark mesh must stop embers without restricting draft. Mesh too fine loads with soot and stops the chimney drawing. That is why the cap is worth a look every year, not just a fitting once.
Coastal Massachusetts and historic districts
On the Cape, the islands, the North Shore and the South Coast, galvanized will not last. Salt consumes the zinc coating within a few years and the rust streaking down the masonry is usually the first thing anyone notices. Stainless caps, stainless mesh and stainless fixings are the specification, because a stainless cap held with plated screws fails at the screws.
Historic district commissions on Nantucket, the Vineyard and across the older towns may have a view on what is visible above the roofline. Black powder-coated stainless is frequently the compromise that satisfies both durability and appearance.

Do I need a cap on an unused flue?
Yes, arguably more. An uncapped disused flue collects rain, leaves and nesting for years and nobody notices until something else goes wrong.
Will a cap stop downdraft?
Sometimes. A draft-correcting cap does more than a standard one, but persistent downdraft is often a chimney height or flue sizing issue, which is worth diagnosing before spending.
How long does stainless last on the Cape?
Decades. Galvanized in the same position may not manage five years.
Something is nesting in the chimney. Can you cap it?
Not until it is empty — capping traps the animals and creates a blockage. Certain birds also have legal protection in nesting season, so the order is remove, then cap.
Can any chimney take a cap?
Effectively yes. Unusual flue shapes, very old tile or a damaged crown may need a custom cap or crown work first, but there is a fitting answer for almost every chimney.
